Yesterday we looked at how we can prepare ourselves for Jesus’ return. In this passage we see a different type of preparation happening. A woman came to see Jesus, and anointed his head with an entire jar of very expensive perfume. Apparently when someone came your house for a meal, it was the norm in those days to anoint the guests head with a bit of oil. In this case, the woman went a bit over the top and poured the whole jar onto the head of Jesus. What it an accident? Nope, she meant to do this. The disciples were a bit annoyed as they thought it was a waste – they all said that she could have sold that expensive perfume and given the money to the poor.
So what was she doing? Well think about the fact that Jesus had just rode into Jerusalem as King – it was very common to anoint a King with expensive perfume – so she was doing the same for him. She knew he was a King – even though his disciples hadn’t quite understood that yet.
Jesus says that this woman did a very good thing for him – she was preparing him for his burial, which was just a few days away. By simply loving Jesus and giving this gift she understood what the disciples didn’t – that Jesus was about to die, for the sake of the whole world.
Dear Jesus, I am sorry for all the things I do wrong, and all the things I don’t do, which I know I should. Please forgive all that is past and wash me clean of my wrongdoings. Thank you that you came to die for my sins and the sins of the whole world. Amen.
