What do you reckon the greatest commandment is?
Read here: Mark 12:13-44
Someone asked Jesus this question, and you might recognise the answer he gave. It’s a quote that is quite well known, but do we all do what it says?
‘The most important one,’ answered Jesus, ‘is this: “Hear, O Israel: the Lord our God, the Lord is one. Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.” The second is this: “Love your neighbour as yourself.” There is no commandment greater than these”
This is a great challenge for us – to love God with every fibre of our being, not just with our heart, but also with our soul, mind and strength. Sometimes when we are angry, going through a bad time, or just distracted and far away from God we can forget to do this.
So what about the next part? Love your neighbour as yourself. This doesn’t literally just mean your next-door neighbour- it means the people you know around you. The people you see everyday on the bus or train, the people you see at school, your parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, brother, sister, friends… even the people you don’t get on with particularly well. Jesus says we need to love them as we do ourselves. If everyone did this wouldn’t the world be a better place to live in?
Dear God, help us to learn to love others as we do ourselves. We pray that we can truly love the people in our lives, and always treat them with the respect that we would like to be shown. Amen
