Prepare to spend some time meeting with God. Come to him confessing anything you’ve done that doesn’t please him and receive his forgiveness.
The law in the Old Testament simply wasn’t good enough. People would make sacrifices and then they would mess up again and then they would be back to square one. It’s like having a shower in the morning on a really hot day. You just know you’ll need another very soon afterwards.
The law wasn’t enough to set people free from all they had done. They kept on having to go back, year after year, and offer more sacrifices to pay for their mistakes. In the story of the Good Samaritan, a priest passes by on the other side. To help the wounded man it would have made him unclean and he knew his dinner was waiting for him when he got home – if he had stopped to help he would have had to go all the way back to Jerusalem and start the cleansing process that he had just finished all over again. The law wasn’t able to set them free once and for all. But Jesus was.
The law was a good thing in it’s time. It helped people know what was wrong and right and helped build a loving community. It even helped connect people with God. When Jesus came, he didn’t come to abolish the law, but to fulfil it. Not to say it was all a waste of time, but to make it whole and complete.
Lord God, thank you that you want to be in relationship with us. Thank you for all Jesus has done for us. Amen.
How can you celebrate being set free from sin today?
