Good Clean Living
In today’s reading, Paul is stressing to the Thessalonians the importance of what might be described as ” good clean living “. This doesn’t mean that they aren’t allowed to enjoy themselves.
As an example, Paul says that sexual union is only for married couples. There is nothing wrong, dirty or bad in any way with sexual pleasure in the right place at the right time. It is, after all, God’s desire that a married couple should join together for the purposes of sexual enjoyment and having children.
To have a sexual union outside of marriage displeases God. In really simplistic terms, it’s like a wonderful gift being prepared for a child’s birthday, only the child finds and takes the gift and uses it before it’s given. You can imagine the disappointment all round when the birthday comes. It won’t be the same again, ever.
Paul continues to urge the Thessalonians to live so that people would respect them in all aspects of their behaviour and gain respect from others.
Dear God, please help us to resist temptation but to wait until the right time and place for everything. Amen.
