How much time do you spend working out what to wear in the mornings?
Clothes are important. We don’t wear the same ones to put out a fire and go to a ball. They also say quite a lot about us and the person that we want to be.
Paul tells the Christians in Colossae that they need to wear special clothes. These clothes are compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. To bear with one another and forgive others. And on top of it all, like a perfect coat that compliments the outfit, to put on love. That’s what makes the outfit complete.
What would change in the world if you were to wear those clothes today? (I’m not suggesting that you don’t wear any other clothes – we don’t want an Emperor’s new clothes situation going on around here!) Sometimes wearing new clothes might be tricky or uncomfortable to begin with. We might not always get it quite right. But just imagine a world where everyone wore those clothes! Just imagine what would be different. Sometimes it takes one person to make stand to change a culture.
Lord God, please help me wear the right clothes today. Help me be the person you have called me to be. Help me live a life characterised by compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, patience and love. Amen.
Why not stick a message on your mirror to remind you when you get dressed each day to put on the clothes that really matter?
