1 Corinthians 14

Do you always use the right tool for the job?

1 Corinthians 14

If you do even just a little DIY now and then you will know very well how important it is to have the right tools for the job, and to use them properly. If you have the wrong tools or don’t have any tools at all or don’t know how to use the tools you have, then the job may well prove impossible but will at least take much longer to complete and will not be done as well.

God has made available to us a set of ‘spiritual tools’ – the gifts of the Spirit – to help us more effectively fulfil his will in our Christian lives. Paul explains in today’s reading that we should eagerly seek to use these gifts but to be very careful that we use the right tool for the job and in the right way. For example, he tells us, Prophesying (passing on messages from God) is a great gift for helping others, indeed everyone, in our church, for encouraging them and making them feel better. He also tells us how we should use this gift – Two or three persons may prophesy but only one at a time. When one person receives a message from God others should stop talking and everyone must listen carefully. All should be done peacefully and in order.

On the other hand, Paul tells us, that the gift of speaking in tongues, should not be used in church where no one else around us will understand what we are saying, unless we know that there is someone else there who has the gift of interpretation and will be able to explain what we are saying. This gift is best used when we are alone talking to God, and we want to let our spirit talk directly to God rather than through our minds. God will understand what we are saying, even though no one else does, not even us. A special gift but only to be used in the right way at the right time.

Dear Lord, we thank you so much for your gifts of the Spirit which help us to serve you better. Please teach us how best to use these gifts – the right one in the right way at the right time.

Familiarise yourself with the gifts of the Spirit and ask God for the one you need, when you need it to help do his will.
