Romans 3: 21-31

What do you believe?

Romans 3:21-31

The rules are the rules. They need to be kept, otherwise things happen. The rules in the Old Testament said that people couldn’t appear before God because he was just so holy. People who entered the space where God lived on earth had to go through all sorts of elaborate rituals and have lots of baths first. The High Priest, who was the most holy of the lot would only go in once per year and he would go into the sanctuary with a rope tied around his ankle in case he was overcome in there and people had to yank out his body.

The reality is that God is a holy God, in the New Testament as well as in the Old Testament, as he never changes. But there is one small difference. Jesus. By having faith in Jesus, through believing in him, we can be made righteous, that is right before God. All the impurities have been wiped away. We might have all sinned, whether we’ve had the rules from God which the Jews had or not – we’ve all done things that have been wrong in our lives, whether being unloving towards God or to other people around us. But that’s all gone through Jesus.

This is all to do with grace. It isn’t something we’ve earned for ourselves. It’s a gift from God. All we have to do is to believe in Jesus. When we do that, the other stuff will all fall into place – because when we believe in him, we’ll start to love him, and when we love him, we’ll start to let him shape our lives.

Believing can be hard. We have all had doubts sometimes (me included in there). Sometimes it might take a leap of faith. But it is so worth it in the end.

Lord God, thank you for all you have done for us in Jesus. Thank you for the grace you have shown to us. Help us believe in you more and step out in faith. Amen.
