“The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the works of his hands”
From Psalm 19. Spend a moment praising God for the world around us.
God is amazing and all-powerful. He only had to speak and the whole world came into being. He is everywhere throughout all time. He knows everything. And yet he loves each and every one of us.
The thing is, he knows us. He knows what we say, what we do and even what we are thinking. So he does know when we think something unkind, or do something for the wrong reasons.
Ananias and Sapphira had done something that looked generous on the surface, but they had done it for totally the wrong reasons (for their own glory) and told lies in the process. They were punished by God for this – because what they had done would damage what was happening in the early Church. It only takes a little bit of evil to make something that is otherwise good no longer be that way. God is uncompromising, and good through and through.
It doesn’t mean we need to worry that we too will be struck down by God, as that is fairly unlikely. But we need to watch our motives for what we do – are we totally devoted to God and his kingdom, or do we prefer our own gain? God knows when we get to the end of what we are able to do ourselves, and he is not asking the impossible of us. But we should have a right fear of his power and seek to keep on serving him.
And what comes from God will survive. Just like this new movement, unlike any other attempt to overthrow the Romans and gain power is still going two thousand years later. We don’t need to cheat or exaggerate what God is doing – because he is doing amazing things anyway.
Lord God, thank you for all your greatness. Help us to worship you as we should. Help us to serve you with all that we are, all that we do, all that we say, and all that we think. Amen.
Is there any area in your life where you’re not living in a way that honours God? Pray through it, and seek God’s forgiveness. Talk with someone you trust and respect about it if you want more help.
