Is God’s Holy Spirit living in you?
This passage can appear a little confusing on first reading and indeed the disciples struggled to understand what Jesus was saying, especially as, unlike us, they didn’t know what was going to happen next.
Jesus tells them that they know the right way forward, the way to where he is going, but Thomas is puzzled saying that they don’t even know where Jesus is going, let alone how to get there! Jesus explains that he is “the way, the truth, and the life!” He goes on to explain that he is one with the Father and that the Father is one with him – they are essentially one and the same person. “If you have seen me,” says Jesus, “you have seen the Father”.
Then it gets even more amazing. Jesus goes on to say that we can be one with him and he will be one with us – essentially one and the same person! Once Jesus has gone to be with his Father in heaven, God will send his Holy Spirit – the Spirit of God – to be with us and indeed to live within us. God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit are all effectively one – the Holy Trinity as they are known as – so with the Spirit of God dwelling within us we can become one with the Spirit, one with Jesus, one with God.
This is mind blowing stuff but very exciting, so what’s the catch? Well it’s not a catch really, but it’s certainly a challenge – to become one with God’s Holy Spirit we really have to let his Spirit take over the controls of our life, we have to let go of all the bad side of our nature – selfishness, greed, pride etc and trust and obey all that God leads us to think, say and do. Life is a bit like driving a car – it’s not enough to take the Holy Spirit on board as a passenger and keep him in the back seat, or even the front seat – we need to give him the key, move over and let him drive!
Jesus reassures us that we shouldn’t be worried or afraid by any of this – he promises “I give you peace, the kind of peace that only I can give. It isn’t like the peace that this world can give”.
Dear Lord, help us to recognise your Holy Spirit living in us; help us to recognize his quiet voice as he guides us through our lives; help us to realize that this is really you living in us in some amazing way and finally help us to trust you and follow you and become one with you. Amen
Over the coming days try and recognize God’s Holy Spirit living inside you. Listen out for his quiet words of guidance. Trust and follow him and then enjoy the very special peace that only he can give!
